ATLANTA - Last week on International Women's Day, Asha Chaudhary, president and CEO of Jaipur Living, was honored at the inaugural Narayan Seva Sansthan 'Shakti' (feminine energy) awards in Atlanta.
An India-based charity group, Narayan Seva Sansthan USA recognized 22 women with 2019 Shakti awards celebrating the empowerment of women and their energy to change the world.
Chaudhary, who was recognized in the 'Women Empowerment' category, said she was humbled by, and grateful for the honor, adding, "We measure our success by the impact we have on our community and the people around us. We're proud of the influence our products have had on the lives of the artisans we work with in India."
"In Sanskrit, 'Shakti' means power, ability, strength, might, effort, energy, capability," said Manoj Barot executive director of Narayan Seva Sansthan USA. "I hope that you will see the ability, strength, effort and capability in the 22 women who are being honored for their efforts to rise above barriers, venture into unexplored sectors, and make lasting contributions to society."
Prashant Agarwal, global president of Narayan Seva Sansthan, further explained: "When we decided to launch the very first Narayan Seva Sansthan Shakti awards for 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia, we knew that it was very important to recognize the women who energize our world.
"I am honored to say that this year, we have 22 2019 Shakti awardees who represent awesome and vibrant women who through their efforts, inspire others to excel in all that they do. These are women who are doing and supporting great work and are going to continue doing so, thereby improving their communities, keeping Indian culture alive, and mentoring future leaders."
Growing up in the rug industry, Asha Chaudhary was mentored by her father and Jaipur Rugs founder NK Chaudhary. Beginning with two looms, Jaipur Rugs evolved into an international company that now employs over 40,000 talented weavers and artisans in 700 Indian villages. Seventy percent of the weavers are women.
Since 2005, she has led the company's Atlanta-based U.S. headquarters, expanding her father's original vision to broaden both the range of products and scope of Jaipur's customer base.
Since her beginning as company president, the range has grown from 32 rug designs into one of the industry's broadest ranges with over 300 designs. A growing reputation for leadership in color and design has also brought growth beyond the typical rug specialty stores to earn the business of retailers, internet dealers, and a large interior design following.
In addition, Jaipur Living has experienced double-digit growth year after year over the past ten years. And, Jaipur Living has won numerous awards in their industry, most recently for Best Rug Manufacturer at the prestigious ARTS Awards last month in Dallas, Texas. Jaipur Living is one of the fastest growing home furnishings companies in the U.S.
The charity's Shakti Awards committee acknowledged the company's achievements, stating in its International Women's Day event program that, "More importantly, every purchase of a hand-knotted rug from them helps uplift the artisan communities that Jaipur Living works with in India. They are empowered through livable wages, access to health care, leadership, education, and more."
