The Best of Fall High Point Market – Part 1

RugNews.com scours High Point Market’s top area rug showrooms to uncover the newest designs, colorways and weaves that scored with buyers at the Fall 2024 event.

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Fashion was the keyword for designers and retailers shopping the Fall 2024 edition of High Point Market. Buyers were on the hunt for newness to fill out their assortments heading into the holiday season, but with the election looming, many exhibitors played it safe with the number of introductions they launched.

Indeed, many showrooms had far fewer introductions than in previous years. But even with a smaller assortment of debuts, there was plenty to get excited about. Common themes included a focus on texture with soft yarns and multi-dimensional weaves; the prevalence of warm colors, particularly beiges, creams, and rich browns; and a focus on handmade offerings, even with synthetic fibers for indoor-outdoor use.

AMER
 

Amer spotlights the painterly brushstroke designs of a new Logan collection abstract rug, shown in brown, blue and gold.
Buzz in the Amer showroom was about hand-knotted collections and the new Sealy partnership’s debut. In hand-knots, the Logan collection, a beautiful wool and silk range in contemporary brushstroke-inspired patterns, is offered in a palette of ivory, gold and charcoal. The Nuit Arabe lineup expands with additional patterns in its 100 percent wool traditional options. Artimes is hand-knotted of wool and silk in beautiful traditional patterns that have a sculptural look thanks to a raised design. And Blaze is woven of 100 percent in silk with a knotted fringe and a faded, vintage look.

The company introduced its Sealy licensed program, which offers comfortable, simply designed area rug options backed by a trusted name. Six debut Sealy collections were unveiled, five of them in wool, including the hand-woven Aloha and Hawaii; the hand-tufted Alabama and Florence; and the hand-hooked Jasper. The Sealy Easton rugs are power loomed of polyester.

ART RESOURCES
The Exotic Fibers collection’s popular Solid Wool program was a market best-seller at Art Resources.
One of Art Resources’ most popular lines is its Exotic Fibers collection which includes an array of natural yarns. The extensive options were creatively displayed throughout the company’s Historic Market Square showroom, adorning walls, floor and even columns with swatches of silk, mulberry silk, merino, and alpaca in various textures.

One of the Exotic Fiber collection’s top choices is a range of solid wool rugs which make decorating easy for any design aesthetic. These hand-loomed rugs come in a variety of designer colors and have a dense construction with a nubby boucle texture. They sell for less than $5 per square foot, earning a thumbs up from High Point shoppers.

Other hits include the Marrakesh collection, one of several from the company’s longtime best-of-market Moroccan lineups, and one popular design artfully wove its pattern over a striped flatwoven base, thereby allowing the colors to show through selectively. The company also unveiled its well-priced luxe-quality wool Oushak rug collection, the hand-knotted wool rugs debuting in muted, light colors.

CAPEL
A rug from Capel’s water-color inspired Aquarelles collection is displayed as a work of art.
Front and center at the entrance of Capel’s new 200 N. Hamilton showroom was the new Aquarelles collection, with abstract designs based on impressionist watercolor art in a cool, neutral palette. Capel designers found that only silk could achieve the fluid feel they were looking for, so the collection is hand-knotted of 100 percent silk, a first for Capel.

Also new was the menswear-inspired Tattersall, handloomed of 100 percent PET in a performance quality marketed under the Capel Conserve label, which denotes sustainable offerings. Matrix, also part of Capel Conserve, is a tufted construction of natural, undyed wool in a linear geometric pattern. Terra Harvest is another braided collection, and it's made of jute — Capel’s first braided introduction of 100 percent jute. Crafted is a domestically made rug hand woven of twisted cotton chenille yarn wrapped with wool. Its braided construction and variegated colors give it a rustic, artisan feel that can also skew modern because of the uneven concentric pattern and the on-trend colorways.

COURISTAN
Couristan showcased its new hand-knotted Desi collection rugs (hanging) throughout its new High Point showroom.
The big hits at Couriston’s new IHFC Design wing showroom were the debuting Desi collection and new designs added to its Elysian collection, which debuted in April to rave reviews. Desi is hand-knotted of 100 percent wool, transforming Ikat, Heriz and other traditional motifs with rich on-trend color palettes. Elysian is hand-knotted of wool offering a fresh approach to traditional motifs in a high-low Oushak weave. Another popular intro was Hamadan, a rich collection of hand-knotted 100 percent wool Kazak designs given a modern update with elements of gray, blue and earth hues.

The company went all out to showcase its new luxury hand-knotted strategy, adding new designs to Utopian, a full-pile Ushak weave lineup, and to Indora a Persian knotted collection woven with a high-low effect. The company’s Kerala line offers full-pile Heriz designs also woven with a Persian knot for an antique look. Valhalla is made with carded wool for a nubby texture that gives new life to a traditional design in rich colors. Oaxaca is also woven of carded wool, hand-knotted with on-point contemporary patterna.

CREATIVE TOUCH

A bold, striking geometric design from the hand-knotted wool Luna collection caught the attention of designers shopping the busy Creative Touch SAMS booth (STA3G). The premiering Luna collection includes four mid-century modern inspired designs in contemporary color palettes.

Clients has stacks of rugs on hand to show its broad assortment of handmade designs, weaves and colorways, including its popular patchwork and overdye lineup, modern tribal styles, Moroccans and the latest additions to its best-selling Bosphorus collection.

DALYN RUGS
Luxury Washables by Dalyn in a display featuring Ravenna collection rugs (RN12 and RN4) flanking Nouveau design NV15.
Dalyn grows its best-selling Luxury Washables line of coordinating rugs, pillows and throw blankets across all collections with several line extensions. Solace collection rugs run the gamut from sophisticated transitional to traditional Persian designs in on-point modern colorways. The Ravenna collection features abstract and graphic motifs as well as marbleized contemporary styling in a soft palette. Dalyn’s Luxury Washables are 100% polyester microfiber with non-skid backing. The company added more soft touch polyester dec pillows, and oversized throw blankets with sherpa backing for add-on sales for add-on sales. In its easy-care lineup, the Nouveau collection is woven with a polyester face with cotton back and finished with a non-skid backing.

ELIKO RUGS BY DAVID ARIEL
Anne-Marie Barton x Eliko Rugs by David Ariel debuts with 29 pieces at High Point Market
The focal point at the Eliko Rugs by David Ariel showroom was a dramatic display featuring their new licensed collection in partnership with interior designer and media personality Anne Marie Barton. Consisting of 29 pieces, the rugs are crafted of New Zealand wool, alpaca, mohair, and other fibers, with neutral color palettes of ivory, soft browns, and beiges. Everything is available in customizable sizes, up to 24 by 48 feet. The company also offers an option to make the rugs into textile wall hangings, with some of the yarn left hanging and unwoven.

Bustling for a standalone rug showroom away from the big High Point buildings, Eliko staff were busy flipping stacked one of a kind and programmed rugs for designers and retailers. Among the standouts in the OAK category was an antique Heriz, showcased alongside contemporary designs.

FEIZY
Thom Filicia Performance Rugs were a market hit, debuting in three collections. Shown, Limerick hand-woven in PET yarn
The buzz in the Feizy showroom was the debut of Thom Filicia’s first outdoor rug collection. “As a designer, having the tools to design inside and outside is awesome,” said Filicia at a launch party. “I wanted to create something that wouldn’t overwhelm the outdoor space, and that would be stylish enough for family rooms, mud rooms, and kitchens.” Thom Filicia Performance Rugs are handwoven from PET or polyester, and hand knotted of PET. Many of the rugs have a heathered look and texture that can conceal muddy footprints or spills.

Elsewhere in the showroom, the Jaxson collection was generating excitement. It’s Feizy’s first machine-made line coming out of India and is made of wool and nylon. Available in 7 sizes, the rugs have a dense weave with a carved effect, a warm neutral palette, and patterns that have a contemporary look with blocky shapes and organic, abstract lines. The machine-made polypropylene Skyview debuts with several oversized abstract designs, but the market hit showcased the color of the year, Transformative Teal. And Dartmouth represents a sharp price point for Feizy — just $600 retail for an 8x10. Machine-made in Turkey, the polypropylene rugs feature overblown Oushak designs rendered in nontraditional colors.

HAROUNIAN RUGS INTERNATIONAL (HRI)

Antique Heriz collection.
Fabrege was the big hit in the HRI showroom. This hand-knotted collection has six SKUs woven in India. Made of 100 percent New Zealand wool, the line is similar in quality to the company’s popular Antique Heriz collection. The bordered pattern is crafted of rich colors like gold, brick red, blue, and ivory over a pale neutral ground.

HRI also earned kudos for the expansion of its Charlotte wool and viscose collection. The hand-knotted rugs have a soft hand thanks to their viscose content and a high-low weave highlighting contemporary linear patterns reminiscent of sketch marks. A cream-colored background unifies the collection’s designs for coordination within the home, while patterns are created in shades of charcoal and grey. Charlotte comes in four programmed sizes up to 10x14 as well as custom sizes.

Featured collections include the hand-knotted pure wool Chelsea lineup of bordered floral designs. The hand-knotted Splendid collection is a fresh take on classic floral motifs with directional color combinations and asymmetrical designs imbuing an atmosphere of luxury and comfort.

For shoppers seeking luxurious contemporary looks, HRI's intricately patterned abstract Spectrum collection ticks the box. These pieces, crafted in Nepal, are hand-knotted from wool and silk, and counterpoint traditional craftsmanship with modern design. These rugs typically feature intricate patterns and vibrant colors, blending the natural sheen of silk with the durability of wool.

JAIPUR LIVING

Gamil rugs are designed by Michael Habachy for Jaipur Living, and feature traditional Persian weaving techniques.
Jaipur Living made a splash with its two newest designer collections: the Gamil collection created in an exclusive collaboration with Atlanta-based designer Michael Habachy, and its House Sprucing line in partnership with that company’s founders, husband and wife duo Heather and Tyson Fujikawa.

Gamil is intricately hand-woven on a punja loom using traditional Persian weaving techniques and hand-carded, hand-spun wool. Its shaggy high-low texture is achieved by treating long fibers of New Zealand wool to a special double washing process.

The Amata collection by House Sprucing for Jaipur Living is designed to capture the charm synonymous with iconic European cities. Each intricately patterned rug in the collection is handmade using 100 percent PET yarn offering rich textures and durability fusing of vintage-inspired sophistication and contemporary aesthetics.

JAUNTY
Among Jaunty’s best sellers was the new hand-tufted Solara collection featuring stylized geometrics with a tribal vibe.
Jaunty rolled out a robust program of nine new collections for market. One of the highlights was Solara, a loop pile wool construction that’s hand-tufted in India. One popular pattern featured dimensional colors of blue, gold, red, and beige, is of stylized geometrics with a tribal or Southwest feel to them. Karina is woven of wool with accents of viscose. Hand-tufted in India, one design features traditional elements that are blown up in a borderless pattern. Fairmont is crafted of a blended yarn containing polyester, wool and viscose for a soft hand and carved look revealing a different colored base, reminiscent of veining in marble.

Paradise is hand tufted of wool pile with an overtufted pattern and features design elements that are enlarged for a fresh take on tradition. And Lotus is a loop and cut pile collection hand-tufted of polyester and viscose. A market hit design featured large curvy shapes with feathered edges reminiscent of flower petals.

KALATY

In the Kalaty showroom, the company was shining a spotlight on its new high-end rug collections as well as line extensions for existing best sellers. One top selling line extension is the Orion collection of wool and silk rugs hand-knotted in textured abstract designs. A market favorite was an Orian rug in a predominantly green colorway with accents of blue, brown, cream, and blush. It’s available in a wide range of sizes —eight in all, plus a runner. Harlow also got a line extension that scored with Market shoppers: this Turkish knot wool and Silkette rug in a painterly abstract pattern rendered in grey and cream with accents of burgundy and gold.

Among the latest hand-knotted collections at the high-end were Amalfi, a range of contemporary Oushak motifs hand-knotted of 100 percent premium hand-spun wool; Celine, a 100 percent premium hand-spun wool line of updated-traditional designs in fashion colors; Forte, a high-fashion collection blending modern-meets-traditional styles in a wool-Silkette blend; and Kosta, an elegant eclectic group also made in a wool-Silkette blend.

KALEEN
The Hook and Beam collection by Kaleen sold well in all of its animal print designs, including antelope and crocodile.
Kaleen reports that sales are strong in its Luxe programs, including broadloom and area rugs, and Market shoppers were also drawn to the company’s Custom Rugs program, for the opportunity to personalize the Kaleen[s offerings. Prominently featured, the Luxe assortment now has 80 options. One of the three new 100 percent wool additions this market was Casavola, a hand-knotted lineup with repeating geometric tonal patterns like zig zags and diamonds. Rhodera, meanwhile, is inspired by the striation in sandstone, with thin striated stripes in warm neutrals. And Jinan offers a texture story and a soft hand, with neutral minimalist patterns creating a solid look featuring darker flecks of of other colors to give dimension and visual interest.

Also in the spotlight was Kaleen’s display of the top-selling Hook and Beam collection. The vignette highlighted its animal prints, including Sonoran Sand, a stylized antelope pattern, and Reggae, a pattern inspired by crocodile skin.

KARASTAN
Salt Life continues to score high marks with buyers at the Karastan High Point showroom.
Karastan played up some of their most popular recent introductions, this market, with two of the best-selling licensed collections front and center in the showroom. “The Salt Life collection has been well received,” says Tracy Pruitt of Karastan. “It appeals to a broad base, not just coastal. It’s really for anyone who wants to bring that look into their home.” The transitional and contemporary rugs have a color palette that skews heavily toward shades of blue, with polypropylene constructions that allow the rugs to be placed inside or outside.

The company also gave prominent space to its Stacy Garcia licensed collection, including a display of the Depiction collection, which is made of wool, with saturated earth tones depicting bold abstract patterns.

KAS
Kas got great feedback on Tuscany, a machine-woven line of textured minimalist patterns.
In the Kas showroom the company was shining the spotlight on a few key introductions. One of them is Tuscany, a plush machine-woven line made from polypropylene and shrink polyester. The various patterns include textured solids and subtle broken stripes, with colorways that range from pale neutrals to darker hues. Solana is also polypropylene with shrink polyester accents, with a soft look and feel, in response to customers requesting more plush offerings. It has traditional bordered patterns as well as more transitional abstract patterns, with faded colors that include coral, gold, and light blue. Sizes range from a runner to a 12x15 foot size. And Hayden’s hand-knotted space-dyed wool offers a nubby texture in tonal stripes. It comes in four sizes.

LAVIN RUGS
Forza, powerloomed of polypropylene, is one of 39 collections debuting at the new Lavin Rugs High Point showroom.
Everything at the Lavin Rugs showroom was new to High Point shoppers including the company’s first High Point showroom. In total, 348 different designs across 49 collections, both handmade and powerloomed rugs, were launched at the fall show, with market shoppers anxious to meet Lavin’s licensing partner Tamara Day.

Mitra, a wool and cotton hand-tufted collection, features warm neutrals with a variety of repeated geometric and organic patterns executed in a high-low construction. It comes in a range of rug sizes up to 10 by 13 feet, including two round sizes. Forza is powerloomed of polypropylene. The indoor/outdoor rugs come in six sizes up to 10 by 13, including a runner. The rugs, in light neutral tones, feature raised geometric patterns over flatwoven base for a hand-tufted look. Optika is a bold look; black and cream polyester make a broken geometric pattern of angled stripes in a dense low pile.

Bargain Mansions star, designer Tamara Day, who has already worked with Lavin’s sister company, Quorum, on lighting, is designing a line of area rugs under the Tamara Day for Lavin label. Contemporary Luxe is made of recycled PET for an indoor/outdoor quality and features bold stylized patterns in high-contrast colors of black or dark brown and beige and a loop pile construction. Natural Luxe, meanwhile, is made of jute and cotton in a thick braided look woven into wide stripes, with shades of blue, grey, cream, beige, and brown.
