EXCLUSIVE REVIEW: RUGS AT THE ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST DESIGN SHOW

NEW YORK -- The 17th edition of the Architectural Digest Design Show had plenty of fresh rug fashion for design connoisseurs to peruse at 20-plus exhibit stands devoted to the category at Pier 94 in Manhattan from March 22-26.

"The show has been busy," Edward Verdiev of Pasargad Home told RugNews.com at the company's expanded booth which featured transitional rugs, and heavily emphasized upholstery and accent furniture. "Show traffic has been really good," added Halleh Hakimian of Woven Concepts, which has exhibited at the event for four years, and moved to corner booth in 2018 for a more open display and better visibility.

While representing just a fraction of the 400 top name designers and brands on show, area rug exhibitors got to hobnob alongside the best of the best in every facet of home décor from furniture to high-end kitchen appliances. In Nourison's case, for example, AD Design is used for branding and exposure to a share of the 40,000 designers, architects and consumers attending. Indeed, the show made a point of highlighting Nourison as a media tour stop for a firsthand look at the company's coveted Christopher Guy rugs and Mina Victory pillows.

In terms of color, there was no shortage blues, grays and neutrals. As at 2018's winter Maison et Objet, blush pink was also prevalent, often an accent color in area rugs such as the new Sequence rug launched at AD by Warp & Weft in collaboration with architect firm Yabu Pushelberg. Rust tones made a strong statement at several stands, but most noteworthy in French Accents' newest abstract design featured at the show -- a masterwork of color and texture.

At the Jan Kath stand, designs from a partnership with the Santa Fe Museum of International Folk Art premiered in the U.S., illustrating one of the most creative translations of archival textiles into a line of area rugs that RugNews.com editors can recall (read full story).
