JAIPUR RUGS AND MATTEO CIBIC TO LAUNCH 'JAIPUR WUNDERKAMMER' COLLECTION AT MAISON & OBJET IN PARIS

In Rajasthan, India, Italian designer Matteo Cibic poses with rugs from his collaboration with Jaipur Rugs debuting at Maison et Object in Paris in September.

JAIPUR, INDIA -- At the September 2019 edition of Maison et Objet in Paris, India-based Jaipur Rugs and Italian designer Matteo Cibic will showcase their latest collaboration, a collection of 24 rugs called Jaipur Wunderkammer.

Inspired by Cibic's 2018 visit to Jaipur in Rajasthan, the collection takes cues from the city's architecture, colors and miniature paintings, and also plays on the culture and beauty of the historic city. In this pop, graphic and colorful collection, the designer depicts a "phantasmagorical India" through the artistry of rug weaving.

The Mirage rug's design is inspired by the iconic Jalmahal and its reflection in its surrounding water. The design, which brings the magic of the serene setting to life, is offered in two colorways.

Cibic mixes geometric and decorative patterns together in this bold, contemporary collection, and uses the many shades of pink, rose, orange and peach that are typical to its namesake city. He creates bold motifs using iconic figures such the Rajasthani mustachioed soldier, the monkeys, the triangular flag, and iconic views of Jaipur's buildings and monuments.

The collection is named after Wunderkammer, the "cabinets of curiosities" that came into existence in the mid-16th century in Europe. These room-like cabinets were repositories for all types of wondrous and exotic objects, just as the Jaipur Wunderkammer brings the wonder and exocticism of Rajasthan to interior furnishings. The initial samples are hand-tufted of wool and viscose, but  hand-knotted versions may be ordered.

THE COLLECTION

The motifs of colorful traditional drawings called rangolis, a standard feature in many Rajasthani homes, are the inspiration for the Pink Haze rug from the Matteo Cibic Jaipur Wunderkammer collection for Jaipur Rugs.

The Mr. Mucho and the Monkey rug takes its inspiration from the topography of the city of Jaipur with a melting pot of images typical to the city from wild monkeys, to a triangular flag found on top of temples, and the typical face of a king found in medieval miniature paintings.
