AD DESIGN SHOW, MAXED OUT ON RUG VENDORS, STILL ADDS A FEW NEW FACES

Classic Rug Collection was invited to participate after AD Design Show organizers heard about its new Gee's Bend Quilt collection, which debuts at the 2017 event. Shown is "Wild Goose Chase" by Annie Bendolph.

NEW YORK -- Despite reaching its limit on area rug vendors allowed to participate in the 16th annual Architectural Digest Design Show, some new faces -- Classic Rug Collection, Pasargad, Nordic Knots, Inigo Elizalde Rugs and Tantuvi -- score a spot in the coveted design event running from March 16-19.

"We are going be there," said Edward Verdiev, executive director, new business development at Pasargad (booth 521). "We will be featuring our furniture line and hope to expand our business to the designer trade."

Verdiev, who noted that it would have been impossible to gain entree to the popular home design event this year as an area rug vendor, said that while the company will be bringing its popular abstracted Splash-567 and Spril-3 designs as part of its display, the main focus will be on the company's furniture and home accent introductions.

"I did the show several times when it was new, but I haven't had a booth for years," said Barbara Barran, owner and designer of New York-based Classic Rug Collection (at booth 514). Barran will be debuting her third collection of Gee's Bend Quilt area rugs, all crafted in India, at the AD Design Show. The latest collection features hand-woven cotton flat weaves; hand-tufted New Zealand wool and bamboo silk rugs and hand-knotted New Zealand wool and bamboo rugs.

The rugs are produced under exclusive license with the individual quilters, all of whom receive a royalty for every rug sold. "The show had enough rug companies this year, but when they heard what I'm doing, they wanted me to show there."

Area rug industry newcomer Nordic Knots (booth 333) debuts at the Architectural Digest Design Show sharing a booth with NYC Swedish antiques dealer Laserow Antiques. Fabian Berglundfounder, creative director of Nordic Knots, launched the company alongside his wife, Liza Laserow of Laserow Antiques, and his brother Felix Berglund.

"It's our first time at the show. Very exciting!," said Fabian Berglund, pointing out that the vibrant building facades of 19th century Stockholm architecture -- it's deep blues, dusty pinks, yellows and the burnt reds -- are the colors that carry throughout the entire minimalist style rug collection.

Participating in the AD Design Shows Made section -- juried galleries featuring local and emerging artisans to international studios -- is Inigo Elizalde Rugs (booth M903). The New York studio, a custom design house that specializes in Nepalese hand-knotted rugs, as well as hand-tufted rugs, flat weaves and dhurries, will introduce Tarmak.

"This is our first time at the AD Design Show," said founder Inigo Elizalde. "We'll be debuting our newest collection of rugs based on photos I've been taking of airport runways over the years. The collection is called Tarmak and the show will be its big debut.

"We'll also be bringing along many other samples in an attempt to provide a more immersive experience to those who drop by, stressing our custom design capabilities," Elizalde continued.
