ZOLLANVARI'S KYOTO COLLECTION PREMIERES IN U.S. AT THE RUG SHOW NY

Zollanvari introduces the Kyoto Shibori design inspired by Japanese Meisen kimonos in the Gabbehs Abstract & Plain Collection at The Rug Show New York and Maison et Objet Paris.

NEW YORK -- Zollanvari will participate at The Rug Show New York for the third consecutive year, unveiling its Kyoto collection of kimono-inspired rugs for the first time in the U.S. at the Javits Center event Sept. 10-13, as the collection simultaneously debuts in Paris at Maison et Objet, Sept. 8-12.

Previewed at Domotex 2017 in January with the full range completed in late spring (read full story), the Kyoto collection looks east to Japan to push the boundaries of contemporary carpet design weaving in Iran. The rugs are inspired by designs used in Meisen silk kimono fabrics woven in the early 1900's and through the Art Deco period.

Hot off the loom is Palm Bark from Zollanvari's Gabbehs Abstract & Plain Collection, a prototype to be developed into a full collection for 2018.
Other collections and new designs to be presented in New York include Graffiti (archaic Gabbeh motifs transformed into contemporary designs with a twist and in a combination of soft cool pastel and vibrant colors), Feathers (Persian Gabbehs inspired by Pre-Columbian and Peruvian feather-works in a traditional 'quilt' style), and classic Zollanvari tribal and city designs, including the Designer Isfahan collection in new colors
Zollanvari will also present its Minimalist Flatweaves including the Caprino Kelim collection (made of undyed goat's hair/wool) and Ikat Kelim Collection.

Hot off the loom are Red Panther and Palm Bark, two new design prototypes which will be developed into full collections in 2018. Also on show will be the multiple award-winning Kundan Silk and Couture collections made in India, including Rapture 4, winner of the Best Liked by DOMOTEX Visitors 2017 Award, which along the Kyoto and Graffiti collections, has also been nominated for the German Design Awards.

Feathers is part of the Zollanvari Gabbehs Geometric collection on show at the upcoming Rug Show New York.

THE KYOTO COLLECTION

Meisen silk kimonos were considered high fashion for their avant-garde brush stroke effects and Art Deco inspired dimensional geometric motifs. Because of the intricacy of the designs, they were hugely challenging for Zollanvari's weavers to execute, "but the results are spectacular as well as eclectic," explains principal Reza Zollanvari. "The collection delivers a thoroughly contemporary, fine Kashkuli-quality Gabbeh created for today's interiors," he said.

Kyoto Ikebana from Zollanvari's Gabbehs Flora & Fauna Collection is a 'What's New' selection by trend forecaster François Delclaux at the Sept. 2017 Maison et Objet in Paris.

Created by a new generation of textile designers who combined classic Japanese designs with new Western themes, the Meisen kimonos were quicker to weave and more cost effective than traditional Kasuri ikat fabrics to produce.

All carpets in the Kyoto range are from the Gabbehs Abstract and Plains collection and are woven using fine Persian wool from the Zagros Mountains which is hand-carded, hand-spun and dyed using 100 percent natural dyes.
