ATLANTA -- After announcing it will target the home decor category earlier this year, Home Depot continues to grow its rug assortment and shares its top sellers in 2019 with RugNews.com.
In fact, at the annual AD Home Design Show attended by designers and consumers in March, the 40-year-old home improvement retailer revealed its plans to grow its share of the home decor business (read full story). And area rugs are important part of that strategy.

With nearly 2,300 stores nationwide, Home Depot has been growing its cross-coordinated private label Home Decorators Collection, which includes everything from upholstery to area rugs to home textiles and bathroom vanities in order to expand its market reach. And since spring 2019, the retailer has expanded its new StyleWell brand, a more entry-level assortment, that also includes area rugs.

Home decor is a natural extension for the home improvement giant, as the category provides the finishing touches for customers' decorating and remodeling projects. To that point, area rugs have proven a growing category, one that continues to flourish.
2019 Best Sellers
To find out what rugs sold well in 2019 and what the retailer forecasts for area rugs in 2020, RugNews.com turned to Home Depot's rug merchant Jessica Campbell for the details.
She pointed to a few top selling rugs and styles, including:
-Haley from the Home Decorators Collection, machine-made in polypropylene with a warm geometric pattern [$179 in 8x10]
- Shoreline, a multi-colored striped pattern from the Home Decorators Collection, machine-woven of a soft frieze polypropylene with polyester shrink yarn for "an amazing texture" and design versatility [$289 in 8x10]
-Home Decorators Collection's modern Spiral Medallion in gray machine-made of 75 percent polypropylene and 25 percent polyester [$149 in 8x10]
-Theia from Artistic Weavers (a Surya company) for its distressed Oriental motif in navy machine-woven of polyester, and popular with customers for its timeless vintage design [$649.99 in 7' 10" x 10' 3"]
-Blythe from Nuloom, machine-loomed in Turkey of polypropylene with classic Moroccan style in fashion colors [$186.89 in 8x10]
-StyleWell's Iraida faux cowhide of 72 percent polyester and 28 percent acrylic with slip knit weave backing and unique updated look [$149 in 6x8].
-Ultimate Shaggy, a contemporary Moroccan Trellis design from Ottomanson with in-demand shag texture woven in polypropylene [$149 in 8x10]

How did the rug category perform in 2019?
JC: We've found that our customers continue to choose the Home Depot to find a wide selection of on-trend area rugs that help bring color, warmth and texture to all parts of their home. Our fast and free delivery to customers' homes or to their local Home Depot store has also made this selection more accessible than ever.
Rugs remain a growing category at Home Depot and among the year's top sellers is the Moroccan styled Blythe design by Nuloom.
What were top sellers and most popular styles at Home Depot?
JC: The Home Depot offers a wide variety of rugs in different patterns and multiple sizes such as area rugs or runners. While you'll find amazing brands to choose from, Home Decorators Collection offers some of The Home Depot's best-selling rugs.
From Artistic Weavers, a Surya company, the machine woven,distressed Theia rug in Navy was a 2019 hit with Home Depot shoppers.
In 2020, what rug trends do you expect to be popular?
JC: Our customers are more comfortable than ever trying bolder patterns or colors to express their style. Abstract and global patterns, along with brightly colored traditional area rugs, will continue to be popular with our customers in 2020. We also find that our robust online offering is really helping our customers feel confident about what the product will look like in their home.
