ATLANTA -- Myers Carpet Company (d/b/a Myers Flooring) has been a major player in custom rugs long before it became a thing. Now that it is a top trend among flooring retailers, Myers is determined to burnish its reputation as a custom rug house par excellence.

What's more, the company's recently opened Atlanta showroom illustrates the merchandising and sales approach that has allowed the company to record double-digit growth in 2023. The new Atlanta store features a 25,000 square foot showroom and 55,000 square foot custom rug workroom and warehouse. “Custom rugs are our niche, it is what we morphed into in the last several years, and it has grown relative to the overall business,” Doug Peeples, manager of the Nashville location said.

Myers Flooring’s workroom is filled with inventory consisting of carpets, rugs and bindings for consumers to choose from. A computer system keeps track of projects while large air tables with holes and commercial blowers allow rugs to float so custom pieces can be properly made. This includes serging, binding, stair runners, leather binding and even custom lettering. The entire process typically takes two weeks.

The investment has paid off. Myers’ rug sales were up over 20 percent in 2023, due in large part to its emphasis on in-house fabrication.

Myers Flooring has been known for installing custom cut-and-sew broadloom applications since 1957.

It’s fair to say that custom rugs are part of Myers’ DNA. Myers was founded in 1957 as a retailer that took carpet scraps and converted them into stair runners and area rugs. “So, literally, Myers has been doing custom rugs from the very beginning—nearly 70 years ago,” said T.M. Nuckols, president of the residential division of The Dixie Group, and long-time supplier. “They are a great customer and supporter of our brands, and we are proud to call them partners and friends.”

The new Myers Flooring location in Atlanta features a 55,000 sq. ft. custom rug workroom and warehouse.

Today, Myers Flooring is a high-end flooring retailer with a state-of-the-art rug fabrication operation in all three of its locations (Dalton, Atlanta and Nashville). “With nice showrooms and helpful RSAs, Myers Flooring offers a first-class experience,” said Jamie Welborn, senior vice president of soft surface development for Mohawk. “Their custom rug operation simplifies limitless options. They show the products well and enable consumers to get quick answers on custom rugs while in the showroom. Consumers can even see rugs being made while in store, which helps the sell.”

All Myers locations have workrooms to cut, serge, bind and create customized and room-sized rugs.

In fact, the table where binding and serging takes place is prominently positioned in the middle of the showroom for all to see. “It’s our centerpiece, it’s definitely a showcase,” Peeples noted. “One of the reasons our vendors praise our operation is because when they come into one of our locations, they see what we do right up front. We buy stock from them, in many cases knowing that the product or SKU will be made specifically into a rug. It’s our mode of operation.” In addition to working with its retail customers, Myers also fabricates custom size rugs for carpet and rug producers.

Myers Carpet claims to be the largest wool carpeting retailer in the Southeast.

Over the years Myers has expanded by selling high-end carpet and area rugs, many constructed of wool or natural fibers. In fact, Myers claims to be the largest wool carpeting retailer in the Southeast and one of the major natural fiber retailers in the United States. Its high-end lines include Kalaty, Kaleen, Karastan, Couristan, Masland, Nourison, Prestige, Stanton, Stark Studio Rugs and Tuftex.

“Myers made the decision early on to move to luxury carpet versus the mainstream products that their competitors adopted,” said Don Karlin, director of broadloom sales, Nourison. “As a result, Myers is known for quality and luxury, and therefore they attract that consumer profile. In a world where hard surface is now dominant, Myers invested in area rug fabrication ahead of their competition and are now known for that expertise as well.”

Another vendor targeting the luxury space is Kaleen. "Myers Flooring has consistently demonstrated visionary leadership in the flooring industry,” says Monty Rathi, CEO. “Their early commitment to luxury carpets and custom solutions have distinguished them as a benchmark for quality and innovation. They have long supported us and our brands, and we are honored to be a part of their journey."

“We have the most experienced artisans in the floor covering industry for the production of custom rugs, which benefited our business,” said Rick Myers, president and co-owner with his brother Ray. “Our craftsmen will make any rug with any trim from any carpet to their exact specifications—even room-sized area rugs. It is their own space to shop. Customers will pick their own rug, binding and serging colors, so they are involved in the creative process from start to finish.”
