If a rug didn't have a literal high-low design, in some cases new collections opted to emulate that depth. This was especially true of some of the latest digital print designs on show, which can now offer such painstakingly detailed patterns as to be indistinguishable from the originals they emulate from a moderate distance.

On the fiber front, innovation abounds, from new constructions that continue to make machine-made rugs look and handle more like hand-knotteds, to PET-crafted rugs that feel soft and wool-like to the touch, to performance rugs that don't give a whiff or feel of being an outdoor appropriate rug -- the area rug bar keeps rising. 

New techniques offered a new dimension to coloration, including adding metallic hues to rugs, and growing the number of colors in one pattern while keeping the cost as low as possible. In addition, fiber advances, and the blending of various yarns, or microfibers in an area rug design lend a heretofore unseen plushness, softness and/or silkiness to machine-made rugs that buyers can't seem to get enough of.
