Rug Vendors push value and price of area rug debuts to woo mass merchants and big box buyers.

NEW YORK -- The spring edition of the bi-annual New York Home Fashions Market, held March 17-20, offered mass merchants, big box, and e-commerce buyers innovative rug introductions at showrooms throughout the NoMad neighborhood in Manhattan.

The market's top introductions were aggressively priced but did not skimp an ounce on fashion, style or value. In fact, to woo these big box buyers -- including heavy hitters such as TJX (U.S. and Canada), Macy's Fine Rug Galleries, Lowe’s, and more -- rug exhibitors continued to push the envelope and offer novel constructions and designs.

The energy was cautiously optimistic among surveyed area rug exhibitors, all of whom bemoaned the uncertainty surrounding tariffs on China and also consumer sentiment. Nonetheless, retailers were out refreshing their inventories and planning for the future as well.

What proved to be the show’s biggest hits included a broad range of constructions and designs, but it became apparent that the clear winners from a stylistic point of view were updated transitional designs in warm neutral palettes. In addition, modern and contemporary geometrics, cottage-inspired floral looks, and painterly abstracts also earned top billing.

Machine-woven rugs that mimic the look of hand-knotted area rugs were highly sought after, as were machine-washable rugs with inventive debuts on both fronts. Soft and plush options were also a top choice, and the next generation of these inviting styles added unexpected twists to the genre.

In this exclusive tour of the New York Home Fashions Market, join RugNews.com as we feature spring's first area rug debuts, which provide insight into what will surely be some top trends at the upcoming High Point Market.

DYNAMIC RUGS

Dynamic Rugs' new Ink collection offers dramatic styles with charcoal grounds.

Dynamic Rugs featured a range of price points at the New York Home Fashions Market, from budget-friendly introductions to higher-quality machine-woven rugs and hand-tufted pieces. The 1.5 million-point Lara collection, made of polyester and viscose, rolled out with detailed designs from florals to updated traditional patterns in a trending palette of beige and soft browns with hints of sage green, and it was well received. The high-low Bloom lineup of tonal floral patterns rendered in ivory and soft browns was a hit, and a notable standout is a contemporary overscale floral pattern with a mosaic-inspired texture on its raised elements. The new Olivia collection, woven from space-dyed polyester fibers in nearly 750K points, earned a thumbs-up for its unique, multi-tonal space-dyed effect. For buyers seeking more dramatic styles, Dynamic Rugs' new Ink lineup, made of polypropylene and polyester fiber, features dark grays and black in abstract as well as traditional designs.

And, for more budget-conscious buyers Dynamic Rugs' Lazer collection was a top choice. These plush polyester rugs offering a range of abstract and geometric styles in neutral colors were an instant hit.

HAROUNIAN RUGS INTERNATIONAL (HRI)

HRI debuts the trend-forward subtle neutral motifs of the Inci collection.

Buyers stopping by to shop HRI's newest machine-woven area rugs were the first to see the company's updated showroom, which added new ladder displays of custom rugs and a more open layout on the mezzanine level.

Favorite introductions for NY shoppers included the new Iris collection, which is hand-loomed from a blended wool and viscose fiber. This lineup offers understated linear styles in neutral colorations such as ivory and soft gray. Another debut that resonated with shoppers is the machine-woven Inci collection, crafted from polypropylene and shrink polyester with a soft hand and intricate classic motifs in neutral tones. Another newcomer is Anita, which offered classic patterns with bolder colors, including crimson reds and grassy greens.

Shoppers seeking contemporary styles gave the Venice collection a thumbs-up. These high-low rugs are woven from polyester and shrink polyester and offer a range of abstract looks in soft neutral hues.

LIVABLISS BY SURYA

Buyers gave Livabliss by Surya's new Glinda collection abstract GND-9005 a major thumbs up for its texture and weight.

Surya showcased a wide assortment of aggressively priced, fashion-driven area rug debuts under its Livabliss label. For spring, a major focus was on introducing machine-woven rugs that look and feel similar to hand-knotted pieces. Among the standouts were several neutral-toned debuts in ivories, beiges and browns, including Ava Jane, Ella, Eternal, Garden District, Glinda, and Windfall -- all offering directional, updated classic motifs mimicking the look of hand-knotted rugs. While transitional classic motifs were top sellers with New York shoppers, brushstroke-styled abstracts and contemporary geometric looks also fared well. Buyers appreciated the fuller body and denser qualities of many of Surya's newest introductions as well. And among the popular contemporary styles were abstract looks from the Glinda, History, and Garrett collections.

Another well-received newcomer is the plush Lavish collection, which includes three qualities: Loop, Shag and Texture, with between 10-12 designs in each. The lineup is woven using a bulky yarn system that lends Lavish the look of wool. Washables, still high in demand, were also featured in New York. The new washable Amir, woven from 75 percent polypropylene and 25 percent polyester, features innovative styling with a textured look and fringed edges. Lastly, the company continues to expand its mat program, adding several new constructions for spring shoppers, including new fashion utility mats that elevate the genre.

LOLOI

Loloi adds to its hand-tufted wool lineup with the new simple bordered styles of Luna collection, which includes
scalloped designs.

All categories of rugs continue to perform well at Loloi, which featured a wide assortment of introductions ranging from hand-tufted and hand-loomed wool pieces to playful machine-washables. Among the debuts resonating with spring buyers is the Luna collection, a line of simple solid and tonal bordered looks, with buyers giving a thumbs-up to the designs with charming, scalloped edges. Luna rugs are hand-tufted from wool. Another tufted favorite is Tali, a collection of graphic black-and-white motifs, tufted from recycled PET.

Machine-made debuts also fared well across constructions, with the Gavin collection of power-loomed polyester area rugs among the favorites. Gavin offers traditional designs in popular colorways with a polyester pile and soft hand. In the outdoor category, the vibrant and playful Maxim collection, which offered contemporary takes on the Tibetan tiger area rug, captured the eye of buyers too.

The power-loomed Gavin was a favorite with New York Home Fashions Market shoppers.

MOHAWK HOME

Mohawk Home's new Oxford collection was a top choice for its nubby texture and hand-knotted styling.

Mohawk Home returned to the New York Home Fashions Market showcasing its debuts at its New York corporate office. The company featured not only machine-woven rugs but also its first tufted rugs under the Mohawk Home label. Yet, the tufted line is not your typical hand-tufted area rug; these tufted pieces from the mostly wool Heritage collection are robotic tufted in India and were the buzz of the market. Heritage features tonal designs, including geometrics and classic florals.

Debuting machine-made transitional collections -- Alyssum, Oxford, and Santal -- earned thumbs-up for their vintage hand-knotted styling. Oxford rugs were a favorite for their nubby texture and updated traditional motifs in trending tones, including sage green and terracotta. These rugs are cross-woven with self-fringe and a ribbed effect. Large bulk space-dyed polyester lends Oxford a hand-knotted appearance. Santal also earned a thumbs-up for its high-low loop and cut texture and light distressed details. Finally, Alyssum was a favorite for its textured classic motifs rendered in a pairing of ivory, slate blue, gold, and rust tones.

In the machine-made category, the latest floral and updated traditional patterns garnered plenty of attention. A notable favorite hails from the debuting Bibury lineup, which includes repeating block print-inspired florals with an updated cottage styling. These rugs are made in China from wool and nylon in fashion-forward colorations with a charming repeating gold-colored floral on an ivory ground, earning a big thumbs-up. Another contemporary floral pattern that resonated with market shoppers is from the new machine-woven Wisteria collection, crafted from mixed polyester, as well as Elysian, a machine-woven tonal lineup crafted from 60 percent wool, 30 percent jasmine viscose, and 10 percent viscose.

NOURISON HOME

An eye-catching instant hit at the Nourison Home showroom was the new Vintage Heritage collection.

Nourison Home had a busy appointment roster with home textiles market buyers stopping in to browse new rugs, scatters and pillows. In the rug category, the debuting machine-woven Vintage Harmony lineup was an instant hit for its vibrant designs in a range of classic floral patterns, rendered in a blend of rich colors including emerald, gold, pink, and blue. As a counterpoint the new Dekor collection, which includes a wide range of contemporary styles in palettes such as ivory and beige and gray and navy, has also become a favorite for its soft hand, easy-clean construction, and excellent value.

New York shoppers were also treated to a first look at the latest additions to Nourison's long-running indoor-outdoor Aloha collection, which included several botanical-themed designs in fashion-forward colorways. Building on the success of its recently introduced Nordic collection of Scandinavian-influenced designs is the new Copenhagen lineup. These flatweave rugs are machine-woven from 75 percent wool, 19 percent polyester, and 6 percent nylon. Finally, the expansion of the recently introduced rug license program with DKNY into the scatter category at spring market is generating excitement, with a favorite being the new Washable Jute collection, which brings the look of jute to a machine-washable construction.

Oriental Weavers rolled out several new area rug collections, focusing for spring New York Home Fashions Market on several key categories, including its aggressively priced machine-woven lineup and washable rugs. Right out of the gate, Quinn, which includes plenty of contemporary geometric patterns, was a hit for its entry price point. These rugs are made in Egypt from polyester, and with this collection, OW also explored coastal themes, including a coral design and shell pattern. Several other collection debuts featured updated classic patterns, including the Esana collection, woven from polyester and shrink polyester, and Alia, which offers a raised ivory motif paired with shrink yarn. The company also added Hadley, featuring multi-level geometric patterns in shades of ivories and warm browns.

What’s more, OW’s new Hunter collection generated plenty of excitement at its preview in New York. The line, machine-woven from polyester and shrink polyester, includes classic geometric looks, modern styles, and animal prints with a refined styling. Another promising debut is the new Ravello collection of washable area rugs that are woven rather than printed. Finally, OW rolls out the machine-washable Sahana collection, made of microfiber polyester for a silky-soft finish. These rugs have a low profile and non-skid backing.

Lush Decor is known for its top-of-bed collections, window treatments, and bath textile and with the acquisition of Trans-Ocean, it will now add area rugs to its lineup. In fact, at the spring market, Trans-Ocean designers introduced the Tuscany collection’s Ethereal Tangle, a printed geometric design, and Fjord, a plush ivory high-low delicate floral trellis pattern, both of which were designed to complement two new bedding assortments rolled out by Lush Decor.
